“14 Centuries of Mystery & Wonder”
Mesa Verde has fascinating secrets.
The D-shape of the ceremonial Sun Temple. Geometric patterns on a painting inside Cliff Palace. Tunnels from towers to kivas. All are mysteries of Mesa Verde.
An estimated 4,000 people thrived on these lush plateaus between 600 and 1300 A.D. They built stone villages on the mesa tops and constructed massive cliff dwellings in the steep canyon walls. They farmed the land and stored their crops in beautiful black-on-white pottery. For years they seemed to live peaceably, almost democratically, with everyone accepting a responsibility: hunter, farmer, basket maker, weaver. But then they moved on.
